Gears of War (Xbox 360)
In a nutshell:
One of the most highly rated games of E3, Gears of War is looking likely to be the Xbox 360’s Christmas blockbuster with the best graphics yet seen on the system and a tactical twist on the usual shoot `em-up gameplay.

The lowdown:
With Halo still at least a year out this is currently the Xbox 360’s premier exclusive shoot `em-up. Using a third person, over the shoulder, view rather than the usual first person viewpoint the game emphasis the importance of cover and tactics rather than just running and gunning. The question of cover becomes particularly important given the impressively destructible environments you fight in, which create a constantly shifting battlefield for you to navigate. As you’d expect the game also contains an extensive suite of multiplayer and co-op modes for play over Xbox Live.

Most exciting moment:
The graphics are stunning, nearly photorealistic, but the greatest guilty pleasure in the game so far is the “chainsaw bayonet” and the OTT spurt of gore it extracts from bad guys.

Since you ask:
Gears of War developers Epic Games are also responsible for the Unreal Engine 3 graphics engine which is used in many other games from Assassin’s Creed to Lost Odyssey.

The bottom line:
Who needs Halo when the Gears of War are turning as smartly as this?

Customer Review: If you do not have this game, where have you been for the past year?!?
Just to get one thing straight, this is the account holders’ son writing this review, Kam Ahary (my name). To start off, I was a ps fan boy. I had the PS1 and the PS2, and they were fantastic, I loved them to bits, I spent hours playing on them, some time getting into trouble from playing them too much (a lot of people can probably relate to this). When I saw anything to do with Xbox I would say some quite rude things about it, lol (which looking back now was childish). But it was the day I bought a regular games magazine, and saw Saints Row and Gears Of War, that got me interested in Xbox. At first I thought, nah ill be fine, ps2 has some life left I don’t need to worry about these games yet, and im sure to get a ps3 with these games on anyway, so no problem. I think it was a couple of days later I saw some footage or some pictures of Gears Of War, I thought woh, holy moly, this game looks awesome, I have to get this game. I followed that game ever since I saw it, and vowed I would get an Xbox 360 and play that game. You may think all that above may have been a waste of time to type, but what I am trying to say is that, this is the game that made me buy an Xbox 360. This is what makes you buy a console, for the games, usually a game will pull and suck you in(in SOME of my friends cases(not you Morphueus 24-7), I don’t know why they got a ps3, they can’t give a valid explanation, but anyway that’s beside the point of this review). So I finally got an Xbox shortly after my GCSE’s, and I have hardly ever put this game down, I might play another game like assassins Creed for a while, but will return to Gears Of War, for a couple of hours, because it has to be one of the best games to be released of all time. I just wanted to get some things off my chest before I began the review. Anyway, if you haven’t fallen asleep by now then here is my review. Graphics: The Graphics are obviously a bit old now, but on release they were the best seen, and to be honest they are still outstanding. There is SOME (not many) texture popping issues on this game, but I have heard this is to do with how much stuff you have on your hard drive. When you are just strolling around levels or playing online, they are fantastic, but when you take the time or purposely look for what the graphics are like, then at close up, they are a bit clay like or in other words rubbish. Do not be put off by this though, because like I said the graphics are awesome, and anyway if you are looking really closely at the graphics, there is something wrong with you. Graphics=8/10 Story: Gears Of War has a bit of a weird story, but that doesn’t simply mean that the game isn’t any good, because it is. I won’t tell you much of the story, because I don’t want to ruin the game for anyone that hasn’t played it yet. Here is the basic plot outline for the game. Gears of War has you playing as Marcus Fenix a disgraced soldier that went to jail for disobeying a general or something. Marcus fenix is broken out of jail as it seems his skills are needed. You fight the Locust Horde who have, come to planet Sera (home of the humans in this game) to take over, since you laid waste to theirs apparently (if I remember correctly). From there the story takes flight, taking you through 5 “acts” each with about 5 levels in each chapter. The last thing I will say about the story is that the game has a cliff hangar, which most likely means they will make a sequel. Story=8/10 Gameplay: The gameplay in my opinion is totally new, I have never played something that has had this cover, or pop and shoot system as Cliffy B (lead designer) calls it. Games before Gears Of War were just simple hiding behind an object or wall, etc, but gears redefines cover. You use the A button to take cover behind any object, etc. You also use the A button as a roll, and run button. It may sound like too many actions to 1 button, but it really isn’t. Gameplay=8/10 Multiplayer (co-op): Gears Of War has Co-op play on (Xbox live) and offline (splitscreen). You may think this is just another silly add on, but this feature adds another level of excitement or whatever you want to call it to the game. Simply playing with a friend over Xbox live, or with a friend splitscreen is so much fun. Co-op play adds some lastivity (hope that’s a word) to the game. Multiplayer=8/10 Online play: The Online play on Gears Of War is simply brilliant. It will have you coming back weeks or, in my case and many others, months after its release. Me and my friends have such a laugh with this game. Taking heads off with a sniper, taking people down and then dancing around them (You know what I mean Morphueus 24-7,lol). There is definitely plenty of fun to be had with the online play. The online play consists of about 4 game modes in which 4 of you go against 4 others. Online play=9/10 How long it will last: If you play the campaign on insane difficulty (the hardest difficulty) then the campaign will last you roughly 10 hours, but the online play, and replay of campaign will definitely last you a long time. Weapons: The weapons are pretty standard to be perfectly honest except from the boomshot (rpg), and the torque bow (crossbow gun which fires exploding arrow). You get your pistol, grenades, shotguns, snipers, rifles, and the LANCER (which is a rifle/machine gun, but has a chainsaw on the bottom). Trust me chainsawing people never gets old, and is so worth charging at a locust for. The AI (enemies, and team-mates): The AI in Gears Of War is relatively good. They take cover and are good at shooting you, or the enemy. Your Team-mates are not exactly bad at helping out, but they aren’t great. The enemies are quite clever, as they will charge at you, take cover an stuff, but sometimes (this is rarely) will stand still or run away or do stupid stuff. You just shoot them though and get on with the game. OVERALL SCORE=8.2 Well I hope this review has helped you to buy the game if u haven’t already. Thank you for reading.
Customer Review: Reminds me of Halo combat evolved…
… Leaves you wanting more. But just like Halo sets new standards. A worth while buy for anyone, unless you really don’t like any degree of gore. I recomend this game to anyone… better get this game now so that you won’t miss out on the inevitable success of the gears of war brand that is to arrise in years to come, with GOW2 only a year or two away (fingers-crossed)

Lara Croft Tomb Raider: Legend (Xbox 360)
In a nutshell:
Lara Croft is finally back in the first game to do her legacy justice since the days of the original PlayStation. With updated graphics and gameplay, and a whole new suite of moves and equipment this is the sequel fans have always demanded.

The lowdown:
After the disappointment of Angel of Darkness, the Tomb Raider series has gone back to basics with a new developer and even a new Lara. Combat is back to being only around a third of the game with everything else centred on platform jumping and puzzle solving. To help this, there’s a canny new movement system that allows Lara to jump onto and grab objects at an angle, so there’s none of the awkward grid based movement of the earlier games. This is also the first Tomb Raider to have a proper physics engine, with lots of the puzzles revolving around movement and the use of Lara’s natty new magnetic grappling hook. The graphics are also excellent, and with input from the original creator this is a long awaited return to form.

Most exciting moment:
The realisation that this is actually a proper update of the original game, as Lara leaps around cliffs like a mountain goat, with graphics and controls that aren’t still stuck in 1996.

Since you ask:
The new voice of Lara is provided by Keeley Hawes, who also plays Zoe Reynolds in BBC TV show Spooks.

The bottom line:
Lara Croft is back in the first decent new Tomb Raider game for a long time.

Customer Review: Princess of Persia?
Had this game for ages and got round to playing and completing in a few days, I must admit its not half bad- or good in fact. You know the story and general gameplay of Tomb raiders - Run around, solve crypt puzzle and generally further your gameplay by not swan diving on a load of rocks. This follows memories raised by lara and her journey around the globe looking for treasure. Graphically it’s pretty good - characters are well voice acted and well designed. ( but yet again some breast crazed nutjob has designed Lara- how she can run, jump and climb with that baggage is anyones guess?) Level design is also good not yet got the scale and height of the out door climbs and puzzles to Prince of persia scale yet but not far off. Now the bad - The guncontrol is brilliant upto a point and then a slight mis-calculated flick of the right thumb stick and your left targeting something completely random. The semi final boss is horrendously bad to target and hit and then the so called grapple button works when is wants. The extremely bad camera angles are a major woe, at points when you need to know exactly where to land, the camera throws a wobbly and your left facing lara rather behind her and as you expect you cant see the jump your trying to make and go flying off a cliff. The jumping control has a few niggles that are mainly caused by the above bad camera work but at points you just dont feel confiedent in Lara’s abilty to jump gaps or leap boxes etc. This is a massive improvement on previous Tomb Raiders and I generally look forward to the next, But .. and its a massive But… I still believe in story, graphics and general frantic puzzle solving and leaping Prince of Persia has it nailed. With Assassins Creed (From POP studios- Ubisoft) soon out this will show how far behind poor old Lara’s fallen behind in the 3rd person action, adventure, puzzle series. Tomb Raider Legend- hmmm not even close. Tomb Raider -Semi heard off - yes.
Customer Review: Enjoyable but…
I have to say that although i like this, to me it just didn’t ‘feel’ like a Tomb Raider game. Having played all the others(my favourite being the last revelation), i was quite miffed at the ease in which this game is completed (not to mention how short it is). It’s too linear… I missed the hunting around for hours trying to find clues and taxing my brain… the so called ‘puzzles’ in this version are so easy they may as well have not had them on there, and don’t even get me started on the ‘cut scene- press the correct colour button’ parts which were a disgraceful thing to include. Maybe i’m being too nostalgic towards the old games. I rather think that this one has been aimed at a more mass market… shame really. All that said though (i did say i like this game and here’s why)… it’s enjoyable to play. The graphics are quite stunning, and the gameplay is very fluid and smoothly running. The parts where you control Lara as she climbs and jumps across ledges are absolutely brilliant. All in all, it’s a good game but not entirely a ‘Tomb Raider’ for those who were really into the original.

Battlestations: Midway (Xbox 360) Customer Review: Worst game I have ever played!!! (except Catwoman…)
I got this game with my 360 yesterday. I had a choice between this game and pro evo 6, as im no fan of football and dont like the games i stupidly chose Battlestation Midway.WHAT A MISTAKE!!! at first i put the disk in and selected US campain. The controls are ok but like someone else has already said u cant move and use binoculars at the same time very well without crashing. The graphics are not really up to my expectations for a 360 game either, the sea is bland and flat and the vehicles dont look anything special although the sky does look pretty realistic. Now for the worst bit the fps (frames per second) On a certain mission u use an aircraft carrier ship and u deploy planes which u can fly. I liked the plane bit the best coz its quite fun flying around but as soon as u deploy a few more planes (like about 3) the fps turns abmisally jerky. You need to drop bombs on a japenese ship but the framerate is so slow that when u hover perfectly over the ship and drop a bomb the framerate cant catch up with u and u end up missing. Also when ur flying, u cant make sudden turns coz its SOOOO slow and jerky. It totally ruined my experience of a first 360 game. DONT BUY!! ITS A WASTE OF MONEY!!! hpfully other 360 games are better and more fluid…
Customer Review: Navy In Your Hand!
Now this techniqually is the first attempt at WW2 naval combat. And they have done this in such an amazing way!

Im a big fan of WW2 games, and even i was getting tired of the same old aerial, and ground combat games like, Call of Duty, and Blazing Angels, so the smart men of Eidos thought, well lets take this to the pacific ocean!

At the height of the war in the pacific where the great nation of America fights the Japanese imperial armies, now i remember theres not even many ground combat games for the war in the pacific, the only one i really remember is MOH Rising Sun, and that in some cases was unsuccessful. Naval Warfare on the other hand can be, if you know what’s going on, now the japanese navy wasn’t amazing, but it was formidable, so that gives some insight into the pacific theatre of war.

Ok then, enough history, now for the fun, the ships are BEAUTIFUL! i love them to bits, from the little torpedo boats, to the aircraft carriers of the amercian navy, re-live the battles you had only seen in Nval warfare films, and footage. Carriers- Without them, USA wouldn’t have done so well, though proving extremly easy targets, they have formidable flak coverage. And Also has the capacity of Fighters, Fighter Bombers, and Dive Bombers!
You send these planes out in three squadrons, of 3, which are unique in there own way!

Battleships-Destroyers- The brunt of the Navy, the Battleship!, powerful guns, and the speed of a turtle, these titans are amazingly powerful in the right tactical way! Remember, these also prove Large targets, but have again a powerful Flak coverage.

The work hourse of the Navy, and my personal fav, the Destroyer, nimble, and powerful, this ship provides accurate, shorter ranged fire, but if stcuj in a difficult postion has the speed, and just about enough fire to get you the hell out!

Submarine- Sneaky, and very powerful, set the sub to a depth and chose your victim, launch upto 4 torpedoe’s a time, but remember, theres and oxygen count, and you will surface, making you very vulnerable.

The planes, useful for attacking airfields, and Naval facilities, Fighters intercept other fighters, or dive bombers, and fighter bombers. The dive bomber, launches a torpedo in the hull of a ship, and remember there’s a squad of three planes with you and they will fire along with you. You can track the torpedo into the hull of the ship. But to do this you must reduce speed, and get to an angle which would hit the ship, making you a sitting duck!
And to finish off, the Fighter Bomber, useful for taking out Aifields and Nval shipyards, like the name you go into a steep dive, and at the right moment release your bomb onto the target, and yes you follow the bomb, and your other teammates will release on time with yours!

Multiplayer!

With great Power comes a great mulitplayer capability, and this is shown on Midway, everyone takes a position on board, like for example, one player, would take one naval shipyard on the amercian team, and another player would take the naval shipyard on next to the first, sending a total of 4 ships out a time! (The same goes for the other side!)

When it all hits off your thinking of what to do, and its hard, no one is following a tactial route, so you must use your units, and find a way to out think, and out match your ememy, this may not always be the case though, overall the multiplayer is fantastic, with an array of vehicles at your disposal!
