Folklore (PS3)

Launch games for new consoles are often given far more leeway than others, simply because everyone recognises they haven’t had as long in development. Genji: Days Of The Blade won’t be making any one’s top ten lists by the end of the year but with their second game Japanese developer Game Republic have made some improvements. Set in Ireland the game has an unusual storyline involving fairies and other monsters of significant scarier proportions. You take control of either the rough and ready Keats or the more tactical Ellen, with the chance to switch between either character at the beginning of each chapter of the game.

At a basic level it’s a sort of action role-player as you spend time in town talking to fairies before venturing out to capture monsters, Pokemon style. In order to capture a monster (or “Folk” as the game has it) you have to soften them up with normal attacks and then reel them in by flicking the Sixaxis upwards like a fishing rod. If it works you’re then able to call upon your newly captured critter for help by mapping them to a face button. Different Folks have different abilities, such as flying or creating magical shields, and you often need specific types to overcome particular enemies. .

Customer Review: Good fun but weird
It can get a little weird at times and you can often leave an area without meaning too. eg. avoinding folks and ending up going back into the area youve just come from as there is a pause while the next screen loads (most annoying). This, and its often not clear where your going as the map is rubbish, and the story line is lost on me. However the graphics are great and the music/ soundtrack is really nice. At ?27… its worth a buy. Ive found a few glitches as well where the character gets stuck .. however get a faq/walkthrough for the more difficult bits and you’ll enjoy it.. as even when you know what to do its still a challenge.
Customer Review: Innovative, but too repetitive
This game is a lot of fun at first because of the innovative way of using the Sixaxis controller to capture your Folks. Having to jerk the controller upwards, beat your opponent side-to-side with it or balance their “Id” in the middle before jerking them out makes for a lot more interaction than in any other game. There are two choices for how to play the game - either leap-frog between the 2 main characters (Keats and Ellen), or play as one of them the whole way through before starting again with the other. Personally, I don’t like having to play the whole game again when I’m so near the end, so I chose to leap-frog through. However, this does mean that you repeat the same worlds twice over, which gets very tedious after the first couple of worlds. Also, I found the whole storyline rather difficult to follow due to my leap-frogging, so that I lost the plot by the 3rd or 4th chapter of the story. The time-frames between the “real world” and the fun part of catching new Folks is also far too long, so that I found myself wishing the storyline would just hurry up and let me get back to the action (odd, since I’m not that much of an action guy in gaming) This game would have been better if we were asked to choose our character and continue as them throughout, without having them dependent on each other. I would love to give it a great 4 or even 5 stars for innovation, but playability pulls the whole game right back down to 2 stars I’m afraid. Definitely worth a look if you ask me, but expect to get frustrated before long.

Customer Review: High Stakes on the Vegas Strip Poker on the PS3 store is better
I played both of these poker games when I was out in the states and this game is way over priced and not as good as High Stakes. I heard the High Stakes will be on the PSN very soon out here. The world series game doesn’t have audio, video, or psp remote play like the High Stakes game has, so it is a really boring online. Plus you can download the Playstation Network poker and don’t have to find the disk just to play. The world series game also lookes really rushed and has exremely slow gameplay. Go for the Vegas Strip Poker!

Dave Chappelle - For What It’s Worth (UMD Mini For PSP)

Dave Chappelle - For What It’s Worth (UMD Mini For PSP)
Customer Review: Pretty Good
I’d recommend this DVD. If you are gonna choose between this and Killin em softly, I’d definately go with this one. Unfortunately much like killin em softly, I skip the first 20 mins of this one too cause the jokes aren’t any good. Once you get past the 20 minute mark this is really good though. I want some grape drink baby!

Customer Review: It’s Worth about 2 1/2 stars
David Chappelle is by far my favarite comedian,But this stand-up special of was a complete and utter disappointment for me. Don’t get me wrong, I love Chapelle’s irreverent, somewhat juvenile, High School humer, but I can only take so many Crack, farting, masterbating and weed jokes. The same type of material that seemed to have worked so well in “Killen Them Softly” just seems to fail so badly in this stand up act.One of if not the worst joke he said all night was when he was talking about having Botox surgery…on his balls…to get the wrinkles out. When he said that I just shook my head in total embarassment and disbelief.Embarassment because that was actually supposed to be the punchline, disbelief, because that was acually supposed to be the punchline.Okay their were a few funny parts, in fact the joke he made about Kobe Bryant playen for his freedom was damn funny. Also the joke he made about telling young black kids to rap or play basketball if they want to make it out of the ghetto. But those jokes were few and far between. If your looking for something funny from Chapelle as far as his stand-up act, I highly recommend “Killen Them Softly”. Leave this bulls**t on the shelf.

Customer Review: It’s a blast
I just saw the basic version that comes from Netflix, but I understand the versions are basically the same except for some added material on the 2-disk. This is where the review action seems to be, anyway.

It’s a blast! Great effects - well, I know that’s expected nowadays, but even so - and I like that del Toro keeps CGI in its place, preferring “live” action when it’s possible. (That was a strength of his “Pan’s Labyrinth”, too).

I’m not much of a comic book guy, but I recognise the sharp and sassy tone of the dialog. You have to chuckle when some absolutely appalling thing happens, Hellboy’s plans going horribly awry, perhaps the end of him or indeed the world, and his comment is “Oh, crap.” In fact, as the monster with so many human failings and feelings, he reminds me of Grendel as interpreted by John Gardner in his marvellous book. The difference is that Grendel can’t help attacking/eating humans, while Hellboy wants to save them.

So overall, just enjoy for an undemanding and never-boring experience. Appreciate the skill with which del Toro “places” you in just the right relation to the story, the mood, and the characters, so that while you never take it seriously, you never think “oh, just too silly” as one may do with inferior fantasy.

Customer Review: Give Evil Hell…
In the world of comic books there are many well known heroes that populate the various universes of each publishing company’s books. From DC Comics’ popular characters of Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman to Marvel’s Spiderman, X-Men, and Fantastic Four; each of those characters are beloved by comic book fans worldwide. Aside from those characters and their respective companies there are numerous other characters that have built a cult following in the comic world, but are not as well known by the mainstream public. One such character would be the Dark Horse comic book Hellboy, created by writer/artist Mike Mignola.

In theaters many of Marvel and DC’s heroes have been finding their way to the big screen with varying degrees of success, most are wildly successful, but a few have faltered along the way, but not too many of the other companies have managed to bring their properties to life with as much success. Sure, there was “Spawn” (property of Image Comics) and “Judge Dredd” (British publication called ‘2000 A.D.’) in the mid-nineties, but they weren’t all that successful, so the likelihood of these little known characters finding success with movie audiences was slim to none. At least that was the case until director Guillermo del Toro (”Blade 2″) passed on an opportunity to direct the 3rd installment in the ‘Harry Potter’ franchise, “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban”, to bring one of his favorite comic characters to life.

With a successful director, such as Guillermo behind the lens, New Line Cinema must have felt fairly confident in the film’s success after he had done wonders for them with the second installment in the ‘Blade’ trilogy, so with a director on board who respected the source material, and a talented cast of actors consisting of Ron Perlman, Selma Blair, and John Hurt, this little known comic book was about to become a living, breathing reality on the silver screen.

“Hellboy” begins in 1944 during World War 2, when Rasputin, a mad sorcerer in league with Hitler, opens a dimensional portal to Hell, and through this dimension a baby demon emerges. Before Rasputin can take the baby demon and raise him to be an instrument of death and destruction, the Allied forces stop him. Among the Allies, is a young man who raises this demon, appropriately named Hellboy, teaching him the ways of the hero. As an adult, Hellboy (Ron Perlman) works with an agency known as the Bureau of Paranormal Research and Defense, founded by the very man that raised him Professor Bloom (John Hurt), their job is to track any paranormal activity on Earth, and protect humanity from any danger that may be the result of that activity. Now, 60 years after releasing Hellboy on Earth, Rasputin has returned with the intention of using Hellboy to unleash the 7 gods of chaos upon Earth. With Earth’s survival hanging in the balance, Hellboy and company, consisting of the firestarter Liz (Selma Blair), a human/amphibian hybrid named Abe Sapien (acted out by Doug Jones, but voiced by David Hyde Pierce), and FBI agent Myers, are in for the most difficult fight of their lives.

After finding moderate success in Hollywood with the science-fiction/horror movie “Mimic”, and following that up with his much more successful comic book hit “Blade 2″, director Guillermo del Toro probably seemed without a doubt the best choice to bring Hellboy to the big screen. Not only is Guillermo a gifted director in the arena of special effects and horror, but he also has a knack for making his characters have a sense of humor which serves to lighten the mood in his otherwise darker toned movies, those elements combined together with his affection for the source material created the optimal conditions for another comic book movie franchise to be born, proving him the right man for the job.

After Guillermo signed on, it was time to build the cast for the project. Now, I’m sure casting for this movie was probably typical by most comic book movie standards, but the difficult part had to have been finding the right man to don the red paint and prosthetics that are used to create Hellboy’s demonic visage. Enter actor Ron Perlman (”Alien: Resurrection”), an actor that has made a career of playing somewhat strange, even scary characters, and who by the way is no stranger to wearing plenty of prosthetics. After all, Ron Perlman’s best known role was that of the Beast in the live-action TV series “Beauty and the Beast” opposite actress Linda Hamilton (”The Terminator”), so with his experience with prosthetics and his penchant for strange characters, it was almost as if he was destined to be this character. The supporting cast members do very well with providing depth and reality to these strange new heroes that join together to face monsters determined to destroy us. There really wasn’t a weak actor/actress in the entire bunch, a true rariety in the various genres that this movie fits into, i.e. horror, science-fiction, comic book. It was a welcome addition that everyone involved on screen and off appeared to have a deep respect for the source material and the fan base, and not just being there to collect a paycheck.

The special effects for the movie were very well done, especially the scenes with Liz’s fire power being showcased. These scenes are where the CGI really shines. As I touched on earlier, the prosthetics and costume department also deserves great praise for their oustanding work done here, from Hellboy to the monsters that he faces, to Abe Sapien or Kronen, every aspect of costumes, prosthetics, and practical effects is top-notch all the way. And finally, the story for “Hellboy” was very fast paced and entertaining, without skimming on the details of the character, which I appreciated greatly due to my lack of awareness in regards to this comic book. Without this entertaining and engaging story that was smartly written to play well with audiences that would be hard-core fans of the comic and those that have either little or no knowledge of the character whatsoever.

With all of that being said, “Hellboy” is a terrific comic book based movie, that as far as I know, stays true to the source material without making newcomers to the character feel lost in the shuffle. Definitely a solid entry into the pantheon of comic book movies and a welcome addition at that.

“Hellboy” is rated PG-13 for violence and language.

This film glamorizes everything that is wrong with our society. Just take one look at the cover. Is that the type of public behavior that you want to teach your children? Skip this for your own sake. Besides, it’s not funny even when it tries to be.

Customer Review: I love the comedy like this
I can’t wait more for this version for the PSP i se the movie is great the only bad thing is only will be released on August.

Customer Review: Nice to the touch!
If you play for hours then this will make your grip a little easier. It feels great to the touch with added grip and provides a bit more protection to your controller if you drop it!! The only downside for me was i had some controller docks (which i actually liked!!) but they don’t slot in to the mini usb with these on. Shame!

Customer Review: As the author of this book…
…I’m a bit biased, but having seen the competition in bookstores, I can honestly say that this book packs more hacks per page with more details and more interesting projects than anything else I’ve seen. The book is a good balance between beginning level bits explaining how to get the most out of regular use of the PSP, troubleshooting problems with the PSP, peripheral hacks explaining how to build your own case for the PSP or an articulating stand for the PSP complete with AC adapter, hacks that will let you share one UMD disk among several friends (either for individual free play or to share a wireless game) and play games over the Internet with a long-distance friend, and more advanced hacks, like full disassembly and reassembly instructions, instructions for adding an external wifi antenna to boost your PSP’s wireless range, and even programming your own home brew code or building and programming an infrared peripheral interface.

If you like your PSP and you like tinkering, you should buy my book. It’s 281 pages of useful tips, tricks, and hacks written by myself and contributors like Phillip Torrone and Seth Fogie. Check it out.

Customer Review: PSP Guide
I am new to the PSP and was looking for a guide which goes beyond the instruction manual which comes with the unit. The Rough Guide to the PSP fits the bill, it is a great reference guide and explains how to use the PSP in a easy to understand way, it also goes beyond the basic operation of the PSP. The authors give plenty of ideas of where to get additional inforamtion, I can highly recommend this book.

The New Stylish Aluminium 40 CD / DVD Wallet / Case
Brand New Boxed
Customer Review: It’s ok for the money
On the face of it, this product looks great! However there a couple of things to be aware of: Although the case body IS made of aluminium, the catch and the shiny corners are not! They are cheap and rather flimsy plastic. The case looks good, but these features disappoint. If I had bought this item at its RRP of ?19.99, I would send it straight back! As I got it very cheap, I’ve given it an “average” rating. Just make sure you don’t pay too much for it.

Customer Review: Really useful bit of kit
This remote is bluetooth and happily works with PS3 behind the TV out of sight which is good. It is a very big and very complicated remote . It takes a bit of getting used to. There are a lot of buttons on it, most of which do nothing during most films. However, it is a lot easier to use that the PS3 6axis controller in films. It can also navigate the XMB menus to use films, music and photos. It is useful and maps buttons from the 6 axis so you can find where you are going well. Recommended if you ever use PS3 for DVD or BluRay playing. Not an ideal solution for anyone who has a phobia of many buttoned remotes!
